Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to us if you cannot find the answer to your question.

No, CCPR is a NOT-FOR PROFIT. To learn more, please visit our "About Us" section, under "Not-For Profit"

Our mission statement:

  1. To raise sufficient funds to renovate and operate land & property in Ciego, Cuba sufficient for use as an animal rescue and re-homing centre for the homeless dogs and cats of Ciego. We share responsibility for assisting the resorts of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo.
  2. To provide aid in the form of rescue, veterinary care, spay, neuter, care and socialization for these animals.
  3. To actively seek and promote the adoption of the animals in our care to loving homes in Cuba and Canada.

We fund-raise and collaborate with volunteers and animal protectors within Cuba and Canada to deliver our mission.

Our vision statement:

It is our vision that the homeless dogs and cats of Ciego de Avila and the resorts of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo have a well-equipped refuge of safety and care within Ciego. There is a strong network of animal protectors and veterinarians in Cuba working together with volunteers in Canada, and we are successful in securing loving homes for these pets.

We have a small but experienced Board of Directors. Everyone is a volunteer. We are fortunate to have loyal members and volunteers who assist from Canada, and volunteer Protectors and Veterinarians who support on the ground, in Cuba.

Our Board Members are:

  • Laura Schembri
  • Celia Kolinsky
  • Nancy Swartz Craig
  • Maya Disalvio Rice

Membership is free. But we do hope you will help us in other ways. If every member made a small donation, and promoted our fundraising events, it would be a HUGE help.

Yes! We will interview you and can match you with a pet in need. Please refer to our "Adopt an animal" page. We rely on you to cover our costs for the taxi to bring the dog to the airport, necessary vaccinations. We will check in with you from time to time and ask that you send us photos.

There are some variations but you should expect to pay $550*.

Your adoption fee provides: Parvo, Distemper and Rabies (#1) vaccines. The pet will have been de-wormed and had thorough veterinary care. If the animal is old enough the pet will come to you already sterilized. The fee covers a 4 hour round trip taxi from our refuge in Ciego to the Cayo Coco Airport. We will book your pet on a flight and that cost is covered in the fee* (in-cabin). We will provide a carrier to get pet to the airport (and will ask you have your own ready to bring him or her home). Your fee will have also contributed towards the feeding and care of your pet until she/he gets to you.

If your pet is too large to fly in-cabin there will be an additional charge of $100* because we are charged double for your pet to fly in cargo.

*Some costs are beyond our control and may vary (e.g. if your pet has to fly in cargo, etc.).

All the above details for dogs also pertain to cats.

Please have a look at our "How you can help" section.

You can also:

  • Offer to join the committee to help our Board of Directors. We need a few dedicated people with the time to help us. There is much to be done!
  • Make a suggestion - do you have any ideas you think would benefit the rescue? Let us know at cubacanadapetrescue@gmail.com.

Thank you!
